What is a Single-Hung Window?
Single-hung windows are a common type of window that’s often used in many low end to mid-range quality home construction projects, apartments, and offices.
In the case of a single-hung window, the bottom panel —- also called a sash — slides up and down in a vertical manner, while the upper window panel remains stationary. When the window is opened, the bottom sash overlays some of the upper sash.
Single-hung windows are primarily appealing for their affordable cost, as they tend to cost 15 to 20% less than double-hung windows. This may not seem like a huge price differential, but it can quickly add up when installing lots of windows in a new structure.
Single-hung windows tend to be more difficult to clean because while the lower window panel or sash may tilt in for cleaning on some models, the upper sash does not so you must clean at least the upper sash from the exterior.
What are Double-Hung Windows?
Double-hung windows differ from single-hung windows in that both the upper panel and the lower panel (or sash) move up and down. This not only allows for more versatility if you wish to open the windows for ventilation, but it also provides greater convenience for cleaning.
In the case of double-hung windows, you can usually tilt in both the upper sash and the lower sash to allow for cleaning. This makes for an easier, faster cleaning process, especially for windows above ground level since there’s no need to climb atop a ladder.
